The Fascinating Trip

We went on a field trip on 3/7/13 to a conifer dominated forest at Greg Streveler’s house. We went to collect data for our year long study. There was some fascinating things we saw like squirrel middens and flying squirrel scat. The scat was on a dead tree. If you have seen flying squirrel sign you are lucky because flying squirrel sign is really rare. Also Greg could identify that the scat was flying squirrel because of its shape. After that we walked a little and saw highbush cranberry skins from a grosbeak. We only saw 15 piles of moose scat on this trip. We saw less moose scat because there wasn’t a lot of food for them.  Have you ever seen a flying squirrel or seen its droppings?

  1. I have never seen flying squirrel scat, but we used to have a flying squirrel that would hop on our roof at almost the exact time every night (1:00 A.M.) and then go to the bird feeder attached to the outside of our bedroom window. I loved seeing their big eyes. One day I saw one glide from high in a spruce tree to a lower limb in a nearby tree. That was cool!
Also, I can't go to the multi-purpose room without looking out the back windows at all the birds that are eating the seeds you've put out. Look how you changed a dull place into one that is full of activity! Way to go!
